MS Module 1 Background and data visualization – homework assignment

(The attached PDF file has better formatting.)

Homework assignment

A.    What is the shape of the normal probability plot for a negatively skewed distribution? Is the graph S-shaped or parabolic? Is it convex or concave? Does the shape differ at the left side vs the right side?
B.    Do the points on the left end tend to be below the straight line (observed value < z percentile) or above the straight line (observed value > z percentile)?
C.    Do the points on the right end tend to be below the straight line (observed value < z percentile) or above the straight line (observed value > z percentile)?

The textbook answers these questions for right-skewed (positively skewed) distributions. The readings on the discussion forum show the graphs for negatively skewed distributions as well. The practice problems for this module explain these topics in more detail.
