Crime Statistics

The FBI keeps crime statistics along many dimensions:

Year

City or metropolitan area

Type of crime (robbery, murder, rape, assault)

These data are good for student projects. Social scientists relate crime rates to various social changes, such as sentences laws, incarceration rates, drug use, and immigration.

Illustration: One social scientist speculated that easier abortion after Row vs Wade led to fewer unwanted children and low crime rates twenty years later. This hypothesis has not withstood serious scrutiny, but it shows the type of things that may affect crime rates.
