Fox Module 24 Student project requirements and templates

           Stochastic reserving

           Residual plots

           Sports statistics

No final exam questions are asked about the student project templates.

Read the discussion forum postings on the requirements for the student project. You may design your own project or use a project template and data from the NEAS web site.

Review some past student projects on the discussion forum. Seeing examples of what other candidates have done gives you ideas for your own project. The work is interesting and can be the most productive part of the course.

The student project is not an academic research paper. You are not expected to produce new statistical theories or economic insights. The student project shows that you can apply the statistical tools to real data. Choose a topic which interests you.

Read or scan the project templates on the discussion forum. Browse the internet for ideas. Enough data is available on public web sites for thousands of good projects. If you are a sports fan, you might use baseball, basketball, football, hockey, or similar data for a home team. You will be surprised how much data is available and easy to download.

The project template on stochastic reserving is from a paper by two Australian actuaries now on the CAS Exam 6 syllabus.

The project template on sports won-loss records is from a paper by Howard Mahler now on the CAS syllabus.

Both topics reflect current actuarial research, and this is an excellent chance to learn these topics. Read them if you like the topic. If you have no interest in loss reserves or sports, choose another topic. The best student projects are those you design yourself. The past student projects on the discussion forum gives you dozens of ideas.

This module has no homework assignment. Review the course material for the final exam and begin work on the student project.

I cannot find anything in the student regression student project forum. Are you sure the data and requirements etc are there?

[NEAS: There are separate forums for the student projects: one for regression analysis and one for time series. Make sure you open the forum by clicking on the plus sign at the upper right corner.]
