Jacob: This seems counter-intuitive. We often hear that oranges are higher quality in Florida and strawberries and raspberries are higher quality in California.

Rachel: Landsburg assumes that the fruit does not deteriorate en route to other cities. Since it takes a few days for fruit to be transported across the country, the quality is lower at the end of the journey than at the beginning.

I am wondering about the answer for Question 2.16. While it does make sense for Asia to specialize in producing clothing (they would only spend 4 hours producing two suits of clothing and trading one of those for one bushel of food, as compared to 8 hours if they produce both food and clothing), America does not really benefit if they specialize in producing food since they end up 16 hours producing two bushels of food and trading one of those for one suit of clothing, as compared to 12 hours if they produce their own food and clothing. So why the answer B?

[NEAS: One bushel of food costs 3 suits of clothing is Asia and 2 suits of clothing in America: that is, food costs more to produce in Asia than in America. If you want to prove this to yourself, assume Asia and America both have 240 hours to produce food and clothing. Show that trade benefits both parties (if both want both food and clothing).]

Confused with concept "opportunity cost" and "economic cost". It looks like the readings do not provide the defination of them.

In page 35, the author mentioned that: "every cost is an opportunity cost". However, in wikipedia (or common sense), "economic cost" can be defined as "the accounting cost plus the opportunity cost" in some situation. And I am wondering how to understand these two sentences in the same time.

[NEAS: Landsburg says (page 33 of the ninth edition): "You may have heard the term opportunity cost to describe such costs as the time sacrificed . . . This term is misleading because it implies that an opportunity cost is one of several types of cost. In reality, every cost is an opportunity cost . . ." Wikipedia uses the common meaning of the time sacrificed, which is different from Landsburg's usage.]
