College Courses

Updated: December 1, 2009

Question: I have taken a college course in this subject, but it is not listed on the SOA web site as approved for VEE credit. Should I take the NEAS on-line course?

Answer: Only courses that have been submitted by the colleges (or by other candidates) have been considered for approval. Your course may satisfy the VEE requirements, but no-one has yet submitted it to the SOA for approval. Submit the form on the SOA web site. Some college courses meet the SOA requirements; other do not.

If the course does not satisfy the SOA requirements, or if you received less than a B- in the course, you should take the NEAS on-line course.

Question: My college gave pass/fail marks. What should I do?

Answer: Some colleges give student evaluations instead of a letter grade. You must inquire of the SOA whether your course satisfies the VEE requirements.

Question: I will file an Application for Approval of Course/Experience for Validation by Educational Experience Credit with the SOA. I do not know if the course I took in college will cover the requirements, and I don’t expect a response until next month. Can I start the online course, but withdraw later on, if I receive approval for my college course?

Answer: Start the on-line course without paying. Work through the modules and submit the homework assignments; you don’t have to register for several weeks. Even if the SOA response to your application is delayed past the registration deadline, you can take the final exam next quarter.

Question: I have taken a course in college, but it was not approved by SOA because it lacked certain topics. Can I take just those topics from the on-line course?

Answer: You must take the entire course. The SOA does not combine pieces of courses.
